Deletions, Omissions and Erasures
October 15-16, 2004
Is there a double standard between print and electronic media?
Did 9/11 change public perception about what is and is not fair commentary by editorial cartoonists?
Should comic strips exclude controversial topics?
Has the nation’s current political climate had an impact on what is published?
These and other questions related to censorship, self-censorship, and editorial control were discussed by cartoonists and editors at The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library’s eighth triennial Festival of Cartoon Art.
In addition to the presentations, two exhibitions were on dispay. Gillray’s Legacy, which took place September 15 – December 10, 2004 at the Sills Gallery, Thompson (Main) Library, examined the heritage that American cartoonists received from Georgian England’s greatest caricaturist. Drawing Fire: Controversial Comics by Milton Caniff featured examples of controversial comic strips by Milton Caniff and fan letters related to them at the Cartoon Research Library’s reading room gallery from October 1, 2004 – January 14, 2005.
The conference was held at the Blackwell, a hotel and conference center on The Ohio State University campus.
The library's holdings of videotaped presentations from this and other previous festivals can be found in Oscar (The Ohio State University Libraries Catalog) with a keyword search of FESTIVAL OF CARTOON ART.
