Mission Statement

The Cartoon Research Library's primary mission is to develop a comprehensive research collection documenting American printed cartoon art, to organize the materials, and to provide access to these resources. The scope of the collection includes:

. editorial cartoons
. comic strips
. comic books
. graphic novels
. sports cartoons
. magazine cartoons

Materials about animation are collected only as they relate to the library's printed cartoon holdings.

Library History

The Cartoon Research Library was established in 1977 in two converted classrooms in the Journalism Building with the founding gift of the Milton Caniff Collection. Its collections of original art and manuscripts have been built primarily through gifts-in-kind. The largest single donation to date is the Robert Roy Metz Collection of 83,034 original cartoons by 113 cartoonists, appraised at $9.1 million and donated by United Media in 1992. The Cartoon Research Library is now the largest and most comprehensive academic research facility documenting printed cartoon art. Administratively it is part of Ohio State University Libraries.

Library Programs

Our library sponsors programs related to cartoon art by mounting exhibits on campus, lending for exhibits elsewhere, and hosting speakers, seminars, workshops and conferences. The Festival of Cartoon Art, held triennially since 1983, attracts participants from around the world. Check the website for current information.
