Philo Clark Darrow (1862-1924) has been described as “a genuine western Keppler.” As editor and art director of Light, he was single-handedly responsible for making the magazine memorable. He became Light’s art director with the August 10, 1889 issue and made immediate improvements. The August 17, 1898 cover cartoon by Darrow depicts Cleveland and Hill, both of whom aspired to the 1892 Democratic Party nomination, building White House sand castles that are doomed for destruction by the coming wave of popular approval for the GOP.
