Exhibitions

See You in the Funny Papers: American Life as Reflected in the Newspaper Comic Strip: From the Yellow Kid to Calvin, the newspaper comic has reflected the time in which it was created. This exhibition documents how social changes, current events, and the values of readers are incorporated into funnies.

Anything Can Happen in a Comic Strip: Centennial Reflections on an American Art Form - Among the vehicles used by cartoonists to entertain and engage readers are characters which cross from one strip to another, parodies of comic strips other than their own, and humorous adaptations of the tools of the medium such as speech balloons and cartoon symbols. This exhibit focuses on comc strips that mirror themselves.

The Face Behind the Laugh: Cartoonists' Self-Caricatures from the Collections of Mark K. Cohen: Self-caricatures by cartoonists whose work is in the companion exhibition, Anything Can Happen in a Comic Strip.

Sequential Art: The Next Step: The work of young comic book cartoonists Darrell Gates, Grey, Hannibal King, Louis Small, Jr., Jeff Smith, and Robert Stull are featured.

Cartoon Theatricals: sheet music, scripts, posters and related materials from theatrical productions based on comic strips are highlighted in this exhibition. August 31, 1995
