Copyright
Please note that although we house materials in the collection, we do not own copyright and are not permitted to provide permission to make reproductions.
The copyright law of U.S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified by the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
Materials protected by copyright are reproduced for research and study only.
Materials protected by copyright may not be reproduced for publication without written permission of the copyright holder. Permission to reproduce material in which reproduction rights are reserved must be granted by signed written permission of the persons holding those rights. A copy of the signed written permission must be on file in the library prior to the duplication of the materials requested.
Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of materials reproduced for that purpose from the collections of the Ohio State University Libraries must credit the appropriate unit of The Ohio State University Libraries.
In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio State University Libraries as described, the requester agrees to hold harmless the Ohio State University and its Trustees, Officers, and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person of their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
The Ohio State University Libraries reserves the right to evaluate the condition of requested material to determine the appropriate method of reproduction.
A copy of the publication is requested for the repository’s records.
- Reproductions for publication and commercial use (including websites) or broadcast of images not in the public domain must have written evidence of permission from the copyright owner on file at the library before images will be provided.
- To begin your search for copyright owners of a comic strip or cartoon contact the syndicate, newspaper, magazine, book publisher, creator (check for a website), or creator’s estate or family members.
- If you are unsure about the copyright status of an image or need assistance in locating the copyright holder, please consult The Ohio State University Libraries Copyright Services, the Library of Congress Rights and Restrictions Information or contact the Cartoon Library & Museum.
- Detailed information on copyright guidelines is also available at Copyright Term and the Public Domain, Columbia University Libraries, Circular 22 from the U.S. Copyright Office, Digital Copyright Slider, the Fair Use Evaluator and the public domain charts from Cornell.
- The Copyright Public Records Catalog includes registration and renewal records from 1978-Present. There are some words of caution about searches that begins on page 3. The U.S. Copyright Office is also testing out a virtual card catalog for records from 1870- 1977 that may turn up some helpful information.
- Pre-1978 copyright registrations and renewals were published in the Catalog of Copyright Entries. You can find digital scans of these volumes on the Online Books Page where you can easily navigate to each volume by year and category.
- You may incur a copyright fee from the owner for reproduction rights.
Note: The Ohio State University Libraries do not own the copyright to all of the materials in its collections. Copyright may belong to the creator, their estate, or assignee, although some materials may fall into the public domain.
