Formosa is the name commonly used in the 1950s for Taiwan, the island off the coast of China to which Chiang Kai-shek retreated and established the Republic of China government. Chaing’s government claimed other islands in the Strait of Taiwan, which generated tension between it and the People’s Republic of China. |
