After World War II, Caniff left Terry and the Pirates because he did not own the copyright to his very successful creation.  Marshall Field offered the opportunity to begin anew with complete ownership of a yet-to-be-created comic strip.  Caniff accepted and Steve Canyon began with great fanfare on January 13, 1947.  It ended June 4, 1988, shortly after his death.
