In 1954, the National Cartoonists Society revamped its highest honor to be a statuette, which was designed by Rube Goldberg and rendered by Ohio State University alumnus Bill Crawford. Caniff was retrospectively awarded a Reuben statuette dated 1946 and he earned a second Reuben Award in 1971.
