In celebration of our current exhibit, Depicting Mexico and Modernism: Gordo by Gus Arriola we are excited to focus this year’s Will Eisner Week scholarly presentation on comics and Mexico.

Join us for a virtual presentation, “Popular Culture, History, and Biography in the Golden and Silver Ages of Mexican Comic Books (1935-1985)” with Dr. Daniel Chávez Landeros, a panorama of the Golden and Silver Age of Mexican comics with emphasis on series dealing with Mexican, Latin American history and biography. During this era, beyond the widely successful adventure and melodrama series, the Mexican comic book industry ran “prestige” series that justified their educational and nationalistic views. During these years, everything was possible, comic book readers had a voracious appetite and consumed American comics series from adventure to those based on film and TV series in translation, as well as local hero, romance, and historical series. To kick off the program, we will first hear from Depicting Mexico and Modernism exhibit curator Nhora Lucía Serrano about Gus Arriola’s life and legacy.

This event is part of the international Will Eisner Week celebration for 2024. This virtual program will include automated captioning.

If you require an accommodation such as live captioning or interpretation to participate in this event, please email libevents@osu.edu as soon as possible. Requests made at least one week prior to the event will generally allow us to provide seamless access, but the university will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.
