Rebecca Wanzo, Associate Professor of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Washington University will discuss her new book, The Content of Our Caricature: African American Comic Art and Political Belonging. Following her presentation, Wanzo will join cartoonists Bianca Xunise and Barbara Brandon-Croft. Xunise and Brandon-Croft’s work pushes boundaries to explore the experiences of black women’s lives in America. Both are featured in The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum’s current exhibit, Ladies First: A Century of Women’s Innovations in Comics and Cartoon Art.

Join us for an online conversation with John Kascht, the artist behind the brilliant caricatures in the exhibition Making Faces. This traveling retrospective of drawings and paintings personally selected by the artist opened at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum on February 15, 2020. Kascht has a skill for honing in on the features that make a face recognizable and then turning it up to eleven. He will talk about his process for creating a caricature and highlight stories of his favorite faces. This will be a 60-minute artist talk. Bring your questions—Q & A to follow.

POSTPONED -Mini-Comics Day — Hands-On Workshop March 14, 2020

On Mini-Comics Day, participating cartoonists from around the world write, draw, and print copies of a mini-comic—completing the entire process from start to finish in a day or less. Anyone in the world can participate.
Join us at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum on Saturday, March 14 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm to celebrate the art of cartooning by creating your own hand-made comic book! Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just getting started, you’re welcome to create with us! We will supply copy paper, pencils, and colored pencils. Please feel free to bring along your favorite art supplies. Guest cartoonists Ben Towle and Melanie Gillman will be here throughout the afternoon to walk you through the basics and help you navigate the creative process. Already working on a comics project (and not wanting to start something new)? Bring it along and just hang out and draw with us.
This FREE, drop-in event is open to grade 4 through adult. Stop in when you can and join in. Overviews will happen at 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm, but we’ll be hanging out all afternoon to get you caught up.

Drawing Gender: Women and French-language Comics Symposium February 28, 2020 - February 29, 2020

This symposium celebrates the richness of women’s comics production and the representations of gender in French-language comics from around the world. Montreal-based artist Julie Delporte, along with scholars from the France, Belgium, the US, and the UK will present their work on gender throughout the history of comic strip.
This program is co-presented by The Ohio State University Department of French and Italian Department and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum.
