July 26, 2008Start your own graphic novel, or just find out more about how it’s done. Matt Madden, illustrator and author of 99 Ways to Tell a Story and Drawing Words & Writing Pictures, offers a crash course in creating your own graphic novel in this hands-on workshop for adults.

Catch comic and graphic novel fever, and practice a new form of story telling. You’ll experience the Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond exhibition and have fun while learning to use technology to create your own comic stories.
Artist and educator Dan Gerdeman will guide you in using digital photography and Comic Life, a fun computer application that lets you easily make comic book pages, or even an entire comic book, using your own images or drawings as panels. Learn a new way to promote literacy, experiment with technology, and take time to play — all at the same time.
This workshop is designed for parents or other grown-ups and children ages 6 to 10 to take together. Teachers interested in getting acquainted with technology at a beginning level are also invited to participate. Registration is $80.

May 20, 2008One of the most eclectic talents in comics, Ohio State alumnus Paul Pope works in such diverse genres and styles as superheros, erotica, and manga.
He’ll offer insightful comments about his own practice and an overview of his remarkable career, which includes the sci-fi book THB, Heavy Liquid, and Batman: Year 100. The collection Pulphope: The Art of Paul Popewas published in 2007.
The exhibition Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond, on view through August 3, features original comic book drawings by Jeff Smith, the Columbus-based artist who created the epic comic book serial Bone, and some of the comics artists who have inspired him. The exhibition and related events are presented by the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Cartoon Research Library.

He’ll discuss past and future work including Strangers,Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, and Runaways, along with his new book, Echo.

Join Bone-creator Jeff Smith and comic book artist and theorist Scott McCloud for a lively conversation about Smith’s career and each artist’s view of the practice and future of comic book art. McCloud is the author ofUnderstanding Comics, Making Comics, and Reinventing Comics and the creator of the comic Zot!
The exhibition Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond, on view May 10 through August 3 at the Wexner Center, features original comic book drawings by the Columbus-based artist and some of the comics artists who have inspired him. Bone and Beyond and related events are presented as a collaboration between the Cartoon Research Library and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Jeff Smith: Before Bone, a related exhibition, is on view the Cartoon Research Library.
