Come explore the rare treasures of one of the largest university manga collections in the world, right here at OSU! Items on display include early Japanese newspaper comics of the 1920s, original art and sketches, comics related to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, and more.

This event is free and open to the public.

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum is located on the north end of Sullivant Hall, 1813 N. High St. The manga collection open house will be held on the 2nd floor in the Will Eisner Seminar room.

The Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum and the Wexner Center for the Arts are thrilled to host award-winning author and illustrator MO WILLEMS in conversation with HILARY PRICE, the creator behind Rhymes With Orange. Mo will be discussing his life, career, and creative process. Parents, educators, and aspiring children’s book authors won’t want to miss this event!

Gene Luen Yang is the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. His book American Born Chinese was the first graphic novel to become a National Book Award finalist in 2006 and it also won the Printz Award and an Eisner Award.

In this hands-on workshop, Yang will talk about how comics work and what makes them different from other media. He will discuss panel size, panel transitions, and panel composition. Students will then work in groups to solve storytelling problems.

Gene Luen Yang: “Asian Americans and Comics” at Wexner Center Film/Video Theater

Asian Americans represent one of the largest demographics working in U.S. comic book industry today.  How did Asian Americans come to be so involved in this medium, and what does their work as writers, artists, editors, and publishers mean for the industry?  Award-winning cartoonist Gene Luen Yang will explore these issues by discussing the historical portrayals of Asians and Asian Americans in American comics, commonalities between modern comics and traditional Asian art, prominent Asian American cartoonists, and how being an Asian American has shaped his own work in comics.

Tracing the 90-year-history of cartoons and legendary cartoonists appearing in New Yorker magazine, the film Very Semi-Serious (Leah Wolchok, 2015) follows cartoon editor Bob Mankoff, as he sifts through voluminous submissions trying to bring together the best selection for the current issue. Leah Wolchok’s debut offers an endearing, behind-the-scenes appreciation of the magazine’s familiar single-panel comedy, ultimately championing the talent and impulse that inspire us to turn the mirror on ourselves.
