Very Semi-Serious | Introduced by New Yorker Cartoon Editor Bob Mankoff May 10, 2016 Tracing the 90-year-history of cartoons and legendary cartoonists appearing in New Yorker magazine, the film Very Semi-Serious (Leah Wolchok, 2015) follows cartoon editor Bob Mankoff, as he sifts through voluminous submissions trying to bring together the best selection for the current issue. Leah Wolchok’s debut offers an endearing, behind-the-scenes appreciation of the magazine’s familiar single-panel comedy, ultimately championing the talent and impulse that inspire us to turn the mirror on ourselves. Carol Tyler | Comics to a "T": Time, Technique, Trouble and new Territory February 29, 2016 Carol Tyler will present “Comics to a ’T’: Time, Techniques, Trouble and new Territory” based on her new release SOLDIER’S HEART: The Campaign to Understand My WWII Veteran Father, A Daughter’s Memoir. The talk details the theme of PTSD and the techniques used to create a 364 page graphic novel. Ms. Tyler will also map out the unique challenges of autobiographical storytelling set in real time with real characters.
Soldier’s Heart is a sophisticated graphic masterpiece that explores the damaging effects of war and the toll it can take on families.
Many soldiers return home and never talk about what happened – especially those from the Greatest Generation. Thus was the case with S/Sgt. Charles W. Tyler, who late in life began to open up to his daughter Carol. By looking at him, you would never know that he was wounded in combat, but as she states at the beginning: “Not all scars are visible.”
The narrative unfolds over 360 pages of masterfully crafted drawings. Stunning ink and color washes weave through the decades: Tyler examines the past in sepia, confronts reality in stark black & white and uses rich color to convey the moods and fragility of the present. She overlays her father’s memories with her own, while struggling to understand her troubled life: a failed marriage, a teenage daughter on the edge, and an elderly father and mother. It’s literate, emotionally compelling, historically accurate, and took the artist a decade to complete. Winner of the Ohio Arts Council Excellence Award, nominated for 11 Eisners, 2 Harveys, 2 Ignatz awards, and named a finalist LA Times Book Prize, Soldier’s Heart is a magnificent achievement.

Opening Events for New Exhibitions February 20, 2016 Join us to celebrate the opening of our new exhibitions, Dedini: The Art of Humor and WORDLESS: The Collection of David A. Beronä at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. Two films screenings and the exhibitions’ reception are free and open to the public. The films will be shown in the Jean and Charles Schulz Lecture Hall, room 220.
4 pm – Screening of Dedini: A Life of Cartoons (Film by Anson Musselman, 2006. 44 min.)
5 pm – Reception, light refreshments will be served
6 pm – Screening of O Brother Man: The Art and Life of Lynd Ward (217 Films, 2012. 90 min.) With an introduction by Michael Maglaras and Terri Templeton and Q&A after the screening

Join us November 20th at the Wex Film/Video Theater, 3:30 PM for a FREE screening of The Peanuts Movie for Ohio State students only (with Buck ID). Director Steve Marino, Ohio State graduate and ACCAD alum, will introduce his recent animated 3-D feature based on Charles Schulz’s long-running and beloved comic strip, Peanuts. The screenplay was written by Charles M. Schulz’ son Craig with his grandson Bryan and Cornelius Uliano. Martino has directed such features as Horton Hears a Who! (2008) and Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) for Blue Sky Studios.
Free for Ohio State students with BuckID. Tickets available at the Wexner Center Patron Services Desk beginning 10 AM on November 13. Limit one per student.
