    Join  Professor Jared Gardner and Caitlin McGurk for a free curator’s program on Saturday, August 16 at 2:00 PM in the museum galleries, opening day of our new exhibits, Will Eisner:  75 Years of Graphic Storytelling and The Long March:  Civil Rights in Cartoons and Comics.  Following the talks, Nate Powell, graphic novelist and illustrator of March, will  hold a book signing  in the main lobby from 3:00-5:00 PM. In 2013 Top Shelf Productions published March, Congressman John Lewis’s graphic memoir, a New York Times Bestseller co-written by Andrew Aydin, and illustrated by Nate Powell, about his experiences as a leader and activist in the movement.  

    This event is free and open to the public.

  • Handlettering and Typography 4 Comics! Handlettering and Typography 4 Comics! August 12, 2014

    Cartoonist and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Professor David Allan Duncan presents the process of hand-lettering comics. Sick of ugly digital lettering or cruddy handwriting? Good hand-lettering is a sign of professionalism – ask any comics editor. Explore comics lettering techniques and materials in this hands-on workshop. Learn simple tips and tricks for dialog balloons, inflection, sound effects, display lettering, and incorporating typography into your comics.

    Materials provided. This workshop is intended for ages 16 and up. Supervised by BICLM staff members Caitlin McGurk and Marilyn Scott.

    BIO: David Allan Duncan (who goes by Duncan) has been teaching drawing, sequential art, and comics history since 2003. He began his teaching career at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He now serves as a full-time professor of sequential art at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). He is from Alabama but lives in Savannah, GA with his lovely bride Kristie and their son Oliver. He can be found at conventions and conferences around the country doing comics workshops, giving academic papers, and hocking his mini-comics. (www.gobnobble.com)

  • How to Make Mini-Comics:  A Little Fun How to Make Mini-Comics: A Little Fun August 3, 2014

    Cartoonist and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Professor David Allan Duncan leads students through the process of drawing, producing, and distributing mini-comics. Learn about the planning, storytelling, and drawing that goes into making a mini-comic. Create a mini-comic and a sketchbook during the workshop. Come join the fun!

    Materials provided. Youth ages 8 and up welcome. Supervised by BICLM staff members Caitlin McGurk and Marilyn Scott.

    BONUS:  This workshop is being held on the closing day of our current exhibits, Exploring Calvin and Hobbes and The Irresistible Force Meets the Immovable Object:  A Richard Thompson Retrospective. Feel free to drop your kids off for the workshop while you explore the galleries!

    Dive deeper into the world of Daniel Clowes through these curator-led gallery talks of the exhibitions Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes and Eye of the Cartoonist: Daniel Clowes’s Selections from Comics History, on view at the Wexner Center for the Arts from May 17 – August 3, 2014.

    On June 19, Jenny Robb, Curator of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, and Jared Gardner, Director of Ohio State’s Popular Culture Studies program, discuss the exhibitions. Please meet at the gallery entrance.

    Jenny Robb is curator and associate professor of Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, the largest academic research institution dedicated to cartoons and comics. Before coming to Ohio State in 2005, she served as curator of the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco for 5 years. Robb holds master’s degrees in history and museum studies from Syracuse University. She is the author of several comics-related articles including “Bill Blackbeard: the Collector Who Rescued the Comics” in the Journal of American Culture and “From the Periodical Archives: Winsor McCay, George Randolph Chester, and the Tale of the Jungle Imps,” published in American Periodicals: A Journal of History, Criticism, & Bibliography. She has also curated numerous cartoon and comics exhibitions.

    Jared Gardner is professor in Ohio State’s Department of English and Film Studies Program, where his classes include History of Comics, Comics and Time, and Film and Graphic Narrative. He is the author of Master Plots: Race and the Founding of an American Literature, 1787–1845 (Johns Hopkins UP, 1998);Projections: Comics and the History of 21st-century Storytelling (Stanford UP, 2011); and The Rise and Fall of Early American Magazine Culture (Illinois UP, 2012). Other writings can be found at jaredgardner.org. Gardner also serves as director of Ohio State’s Popular Culture Studies.

    Wexner Center Director of Film/Video David Filipi, in-house curator of both exhibitions, and Caitlin McGurk from the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, will share their insights.  Please meet at the gallery entrance. Stay afterward for the 7:00 pm screening of Art School Confidential, an adaptation of a Clowes comic.

    David Filipi is the Wexner Center’s Director of Film/Video. In addition to his extensive work organizing film series and retrospectives of established and emerging filmmakers, Filipi has taught animation history for Ohio State’s Film Studies Program since 2004 and is a member of Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum advisory board. In the summer of 2008, Filipi co-curated Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond—the first exhibition devoted to the famed comic book artist—which received national acclaim and coverage by such media outlets as PBS’s NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. In 2013, he curated Fantastic! The Comic Art of Sandy Plunkett for Ohio University’s Kennedy Museum of Art in Athens, OH. He received his master’s degree in film studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

    Caitlin McGurk is the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum’s Engagement Coordinator and works to cultivate and raise awareness of the library’s collection among students, comics communities, and the greater public. It is a mission she tackles with pleasure, sharing the treasures of the collection through social networking, classroom instruction and workshops, building relationships with contemporary cartoonists, and giving presentations at conferences and conventions. McGurk has also worked for the Center for Cartoon Studies’ Schulz Library, the Bulliet Comics Collection of Columbia University, and Marvel Comics. She has also written for Diamond Comics’Bookshelf magazine for educators and librarians, published her own comics, and remains active in the comics community at large.
